The General Theory Of Crime - 2462 Words

â€Å"Historically, criminologists have separately studied the pattern and causes of criminal offending and the pattern and causes of victimization† (Piquero et al., 2005, p.55). This began to change when criminologists recognized a strong relationship between offending and victimization. Scholars argue that this relationship can be explained by a common underlying trait of low self-control. Gottfredson and Hirschi first introduced low self-control as an explanation of offending in the General Theory of Crime, and more recent studies have applied the theory to victimization. In this paper, we will first discuss Gottfredson and Hirschi’s General Theory of Crime as it applies to criminality. Then, we will review the literature to see how their†¦show more content†¦They also tend to engage in â€Å"analogous criminal acts† such as smoking, drinking, gambling, irresponsible sex, and speeding in cars. In households where children are cared for and appropriate ly disciplined, those children develop the self-control needed, through socialization, to resist the easy temptations offered by crime. This early developmental process is key in setting the stage for later life. (McMurtry Curling, 2008) Gottfredson and Hirschi strayed from Hirschi’s previous theory that social control protected people from participating in criminal activities in favor of the conception that self-control, or lack thereof, could be used to explain criminal behavior. According to the general theory of crime, crime occurs through the following process: (1) an impulsive personality to (2) lack of self-control to (3) the withering of social bonds to (4) the opportunity to commit crime and delinquency to (5) deviant behavior. Gottfredson and Hirschi suggest that those who engage in crime do so to obtain immediate gratification. People with a propensity for criminal involvement are said to lack self-control, or the ability to delay short-term desires. Theorists state that this lack of self-control can be traced back to early childhood when early indications of deviant behavior emerge. What Does Niche Mean in Ecological Biology

The term niche, when used in the science of ecological biology, is used to define an organisms role in an ecosystem. Not only does its niche include the environment that a given organism lives in, but it also includes the organisms job in that environment. A niche may also encompass what the organism eats, how it interacts with other living (biotic) elements, and also how it interacts with the nonliving (abiotic) aspects of the environment, as well. Fundamental Niche vs. Realized Niche All living organisms have what is called a fundamental niche. The fundamental niche includes all possibilities open to the organism within that environment: all possible sources of food, all open behavioral roles in the environment, and all suitable habitats available to it. For example, a black bear (Ursa americanus) is a broadly distributed, omnivorous species that has a sizeable fundamental niche, since it can eat meat as well as a broad range of vegetation, and can thrive in low woodlands as well as grassy mountain regions. It thrives in the deep wilderness but is also highly adaptable to areas near human settlement. In reality, though, an organism cannot use all suitable resources in an environment at the same time. Instead, the organism will have a narrower range of foods, roles, and habitats that it makes use of. This more specific role is called the organisms realized niche. For example, circumstances or competition may reduce a black bears realized niche into one where foods consist exclusively of berries and carrion meats, and shelter is limited to earthen burrows. Rather than a hunter, its niche may become that of a browser.   Relationships With Other Organisms Symbiotic relationships also come into play to determine an organisms niche. Predators that are in the area can limit an organisms niche and particularly where it can find safety and shelter. Competitors will also limit food sources and other nutrients, so they can also affect where an organism makes its home. For example, the black bear and brown bear (Ursus  arctos) overlap over much of their ranges, and where this occurs, the more powerful brown bear will generally have its pick of shelter and game, limiting the niche available to the black bear.   Not all relationships are competitive. An organism may also seek out other species to have positive interactions with to define its niche. Commensalism and mutualism with other species in the area can make an organisms life easier. Commensalism is a relationship in which one species benefits while the other is unaffected; mutualism  is a relationship in which both species benefit. A black bear that learns to feed on an abundance of raccoons killed along a highway is practicing commensalism; a bear that devours large quantities of blackberries, then plants new berries by distributing them through its scat deposits  is practicing mutualism. Relationships with Non-Living (Abiotic) Factors Abiotic factors, such as water availability, climate, weather—and in the case of plants, soil types, and amount of sunlight—can also narrow an organisms fundamental niche to its realized niche. Faced with a prolonged forest drought, for example, our black bear may find its realized niche redefined as favored plants dwindle, game  species become more scarce, and as water shortages force it to seek shelter in other locations. To some degree, an organism can adapt to its environment, but its basic needs must first be met in order in order for it to establish a niche.

Scuba diving Essay Many people think of scuba diving as just a swim in the water, but in reality it is a very exciting, dangerous, and potentially fatal sport and activity. There are many types of scuba diving, ranging from recreational to sport to career diving. Scuba Diving is just not a swim in the water, scuba requires certification, uses technical equipment, and there is a lot of risk involved with scuba diving. Scuba, which is actually an acronym for self-contained breathing apparatus,Allows divers to dive deeper and stay submerged longer. Scuba comes a long way from other forms of diving by using an air-tank and regulator. This is what allows them to stay under longer and dive deeper. Scuba originally began with military and commercial applications, where it is still used today. But now, by far the largest group of divers is Recreational Divers. These dives are practiced at depths of less than 130 feet, from these depths, divers can make a straight ascent to the surface. Diving beyond this limit requires advanced training. (Lawrence, 4) Before recreational or sport divers can take a plunge into the water, they must complete a course in scuba diving and become certified. There are many scuba diving agencies, the largest being PADI, but there are many others, including the National Association of Underwater Instructors and the National Association of Scuba Diving Schools. All agencies requi re that participants be proficient swimmers, in reasonably good health, and at least 12 years of age. The course usually consists of classroom work, practice in a pool or confined body of water, and dives in open water. In the course, students learn to use diving equipment, to equalize air pressure as they descend, to swim efficiently underwater, to clear the mask if water leaks in, and to ascend safely. Because divers cannot talk to each other underwater, they also learn how to communicate underwater with hand signals. Scuba diving should always be practiced with at least one other person, and partners should remain together throughout the dive. Certification courses teach divers the rules and advantages of the buddy system. Diving partners learn to double-check each others equipment, share a single air supply, and assist one another should a problem occur. Neutral Buoyancy is an important skill taught in certification class. Neutral Buoyancy is a state, in which the individual nei ther sinks nor floats. In this weightless state, a diver conserves energy and air and keeps diving equipment off the bottom where it could be damaged. To become certified, diving students must pass a written exam and a swimming proficiency test, and successfully demonstrate newly mastered skills in four open-water dives. Proficient divers then receive a certification card that allows them to make unsupervised dives, refill air tanks, and buy diving equipment world-wide. Stores that sell diving equipment and businesses that operate diving tours require this proof of certification. During the certification course, divers will learn everything about the technical equipment and how to use it.(Lawrence, 24) Diving equipment depends on the location of the dive, but whether sport or recreational diving, divers need several basic items of equipment: a mask, a snorkel, fins, and when necessary, and exposure suit to remain warm, air-tank and regulator. The diving mask covers the nose and eyes and enables the diver to see while underwater. A snorkel is a tube that allows the diver to breathe while floating at the waters surface. One end fits in the divers mouth and the other end extends above the water. The fins are worn on the feet of the diver, these help the diver propel themselves through the water with a smooth, energy-efficient motion. Wet suits are worn to keep the diver warm in warm-water temperatures and dry-suits are used in cold-water temperatures. A wet suit is made of Neoprene rubber and absorbs and traps a thin layer of water, which the divers body heat quickly heats. In temperatures below 50 degrees, divers wear a dry-suit. To breathe under-water, scuba divers wear a metal tank filled with compressed air, and a regulator that attaches to the tank. The regulator reduces the pressure of the air to match the surrounding water pressure, so that the diver can breathe the air comfortably. The regulator also distributes the air among four hoses. One hose delivers air to a mouthpiece, through which the diver inhales and exhales. Another hose from the regulator attaches to an adjustable air bladder called a Buoyancy Compensator devise, which the diver wears as a vest. By adding air to the BCD, the diver becomes more buoyant and rises, by releasing air, the diver becomes less buoyant and sinks. With minor adjustments of air, the diver can achieve neutral buoyancy. A third hose attaches to pressure gauges that divers use to monitor how much air remains in the tank. A fourth hose attaches to a backup breathing device called an alternate source, or octopus. Divers also wear a belt with lead weights to help them descend and stay underwater. The weights are spaced evenly around the belt for balance. Most divers carry from 5 to 20 pounds of weight, depending on their body weight, the suit they are wearing, and where they are diving. A quick-release buckle enables the diver to shed the belt and rise to the surface in an emergency. Emergency equipment includes a dive knife, in case the diver becomes entangled in fishing line or marine plants, and whistles, lights, or signaling devices, in case the diver is lost or swept out in a current. Divers should also have a tank of oxygen onboard, along with a marine radio and a first aid kit. The diver should not only have knowledge of his equipment but a scientific knowledge of his surroundings underwater. All matter, including air, has weight due to earths gravity. Accordingly, anything exposed to air is under pressure-the weight of the atmosphere above it. This weight of air, due to gravity, is known as atmospheric pressure. Gravity keeps the atmosphere wedded to the earth. Without gravity, earths atmosphere would float away to outer space. Since gravity diminishes with distance from the center of the earth, air weighs less at altitude than at sea level. Literally, air at altitude is thinner compared to at sea level, and air becomes progressively less dense with increasing altitude. The pressure under water can cause many hazards for any type of diver. (Reseck, 68)Hazards associated with recreational diving stem chiefly from breathing air under pressure, though a few marine animals also pose hazards. Most hazards can be avoided if divers follow the safety procedures taught in certification courses and do not attempt dives beyond their ability and experience. The single largest risk scuba divers face is pressure-related injury. Decompression sickness, also called the bends, is an injury that occurs when a diver ascends too quickly, or dives too deeply for too long. Throughout a dive, the body absorbs nitrogen.This nitrogen forms tiny bubbles in the divers tissues and bloodstream. If a diver ascends to the surface too quickly, these bubbles remain trapped inside the body and can cause extreme pain in joi nts and organs. Severe cases of decompression sickness can be fatal. For this reason, all divers attempt to ascend slowly from every dive, to allow excess nitrogen to escape the body gradually. Divers who suspect they are suffering from decompression sickness should seek medical attention immediately. Another pressure-related injury is an air embolism. It occurs when a diver ascends too rapidly and the gases in the divers bloodstream form a large bubble. If large enough, the bubble can block the flow of blood to the brain and be fatal. To avoid these injuries, divers calculate how long it is safe to stay at certain depths and how long they should spend on the surface before diving again. Divers must also wait at least 12 hours, and sometimes 24 hours, after a dive before flying on a plane. Because air pressure changes rapidly when a plane increases its altitude, flying to soon after diving can result in decompression sickness. Most marine animals pose no threat to divers. In fact, d ivers pose far more a threat to the animals. Coral, for example, can be killed by a divers single touch. However, a few forms of marine life can injure divers. Jellyfish, fire coral, sting coral and sea urchins are the most common threats. In rare cases, poisonous fish and sharks can also injure people. In general, animals only attack humans when they are provoked. Scuba diving should be a visual experience, and divers should avoid touching anything plant, animal, or object. Other risks inherent in recreational diving include running out of air, breathing contaminated air, or being injured by a boat. Certification courses not only teach divers how to avoid these problems, but also how to treat a fellow diver should an injury occur. Cave diving offers an opportunity to explore the geological wonders of underwater caves. It is far more dangerous than diving in open water because, once inside a cave, the diver cannot return directly to the surface for air. Cave divers use multiple tanks, backup systems, and other specialized equipment to travel safely in the complete darkness of caves. They also carry a reel of strong, lightweight line, which they attach to a solid object outside the cave. From what I see, these pandas serve no use but to stimulate the part of the human brain labeled as â€Å"cute things to look at,† I cannot deny how visually satisfied I feel when looking at these rotund beasts. These creatures are classified as bears; bears eat meat. Pandas, do not eat meat, therefore pandas are stupid. How can a creature be idiotic enough to not eat something it was designed to consume? It must constantly consume bamboo to avoid falling into a coma from starvation. As I looked at the bear in the zoo exhibit I thought to myself, â€Å"how can that creature be so nutritionally inept that it can’t even submit to its natural desire for meat?† This morbidly large fiend that sits in front of me, has the propensity to spend the majority of its time creating vast amounts of feces as a result of how much it eats (once again bamboo provides no benefit). In the time that it spend defecating it could have managed to develop a well-established investment po rtfolio or even complete a hundred games of monopoly. Yes, that is indeed how much time it spends crapping its life away. It’s incredible, it blows the â€Å"s***† out of my mind. Lastly, these astonishing mammals possess the incredible ability to contribute to their own species’ decline, it’s fascinating! Pandas have a frustratingly weak libido that not even an overdose of Viagra can solve, never sensing the urge to reproduce. SPECIES ARE MEANT TO REPRODUCE IT’S HOW THEY SURVIVE. JUST HAVE SEX, IT IS NOT THAT HARD (Especially if you’re a male panda, it’s literally never hard). This ultimately deems them useless. But hey, they’re still cute right? So how do we put these creatures to use before they inevitably run themselves into extinction? The tremendously simple answer I propose is that we eat them. World hunger is in dire need of a solution. I imagine a luxurious dish of panda meat is quite delectable in the eyes of the starving. By distributing the meat of these bears, we could feed thousands, even millions of individuals suffering from the conflict of famine. Just imagine, a single panda bear would supply endless amounts of meat for a large amount of individuals. Just think of how large one bear is! With the current livestock providing for the average human’s diet, adding pandas to the list of foods we can eat would increase the food supply giving us more room to distribute to those in need, since our very limited source of current livestock cannot seem to get the job done. That leads to the question then, â€Å"won’t we not run out of pandas if they refuse to reproduce with each other?† A solution is evident, though the meat industry appears to have absolutely no problems with maintaining the exponential growth rate of swine and cows. All pandas should be captured and sent to the meat industry where they could be bred in vast amounts. Once a large population of these pandas have been sustained we will have a new source of food. A source that does not emit methane through its ghastly burps and farts, might I add. The current livestock we breed emits dangerous gaseous emissions into the air, yes cow farts are harmful to more than just our nasal cells. In a beneficial alternative for the environment, we can invoke a fresh scent of bamboo farts, killing two birds with one stone as we defend the environment! Now, with that solution in mind, people will begin to wonder whether or not the consumption of panda meat is beneficial to the health of humankind. After all, the point of resolving this issue is to restore the health and well-being of those individuals who suffer from malnutrition. Through modern technology it is safe to assure that the panda meat being distributed to underprivileged regions of the world is indeed healthy. Within these panda breeding factories we can provide the bears with hormones to enhance their growth and reproduction rate. The issue of panda population decline would be another problem solved by taking this approach, just look at how outnumbered humans are by these flightless, excuse-of-a- bird known as chickens. By utilizing GMOs, the quality and quantity of the bears being distributed throughout the world will vitally increase. The health of the bears may always be monitored once they are placed in these factories. Aren’t all the meat products we consu me extremely healthy when being bred? I would say McDonalds agrees with that contention. By exploiting pandas as a resource of food for the impoverished, use could actually be put to them rather than displaying them in an exhibit or letting them reside naturally where they serve absolutely no purpose to themselves nor to the rest of the ecosystem around them. And through the efficient usage of GMOs it can be ensured that the supply and quality of panda meat being distributed throughout the world will be of high standard. Unless another individual possesses a solution that has the qualities to be more well-rounded and effective, I suggest that my current proposition be employed. The world has a population of malnourished individuals that is beyond excessive and if we don’t do something about it, as we have done for the pandas, we’ll end up slowly but surely damaging our own species and population.
